Concussion

General characteristics

General characteristics

The word concussion derives from the Latin for 'shaking' or 'striking together' and describes an injury to the brain as the result of a bang to the head. Concussion results in a usually temporary paralysis of brain function caused by the trauma of the brain bumping around in the skull.
The initial trauma of the concussion is not always serious in itself but the person should be watched closely for signs of complications that may develop as a result of internal bleeding or serious damage such as seizures, rises in pressure in the skull cavity and, in worse case scenarios, brain damage. These signs include being very confused, vomiting repeatedly, severe headache, shallow breathing and weak pulse and losing consciousness for prolonged periods.
With a mild concussion the person may or may not lose consciousness but will probably have a  mild headache, blurred vision, dizziness, shakiness, nausea, vomiting or confusion.
